Maria Castro (BMus, PhD)

Maria Castro is a sound artist, lecturer and researcher currently based in France. She obtained a First-Class degree in Music at Royal Holloway College in 2000, and was awarded a PhD by the University of London in 2006. Her research interests focus on the creative use of sound, particularly in the fields of cinema, the visual arts, theatre and architecture. Maria worked in France and in the UK as a free lance sound designer and composer for film, animation, video art and documentary. Among others, she had projects with the London Film School, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, CinéArchives and Audio Architecture, and her work has been presented internationally in film festivals, art galleries and conferences. In 2004 she was one of the three finalists of the Volkswagen Score Competition for sound designers and composers at the Talent Campus of the Berlin International Film Festival. In 2009 Maria was appointed Lecturer in Music Technology at the University of Huddersfield, UK, where she taught Music and the Moving Image, Sound Design for Picture and Computer Composition. Between 2013 and 2015 she acted as External Examiner at the Sound Department of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre (ENSATT) in Lyon, becoming in 2016 a lecturer at this institution. She was part of the jury of the Phonurgia Nova Awards in 2015.
